BHX - Birmingham International Information

Birmingham Airport was opened in 1939 and operated by Birmingham City Council as a municipal airport, designed to meet the needs of the residence and the industry of the city and its immediate surroundings.

In 1974 the newly formed West Midlands Metropolitan County Council, incorporating the seven Metropolitan areas of Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, Walsall and Wolverhampton, took over the airport.

As international flights became available, the terminal and the runway were expanded. However, it soon became evident that a more long term solution was required, and in 1984 the main Terminal was opened with a capacity for 3 million passengers.

During the late eighties the ownership of Birmingham Airport was transferred to Birmingham International Airport Plc, a public limited company owned by the seven West Midland district councils.

1991 saw the opening of Birmingham International Airport’s second terminal the Eurohub, a concept already developed in the United States aimed to reduce the distance passengers had to walk to, from and between flights, thus reducing transfer times.

Today Birmingham Airport sees about 3 million passengers fly out with 42 different airlines and has been rated 20th for overall passenger convenience in a leading survey of the world’s best airports, being the only UK airport to be listed in the analysis of passenger satisfaction.
