HUY - Humberside Information

In late 1941 construction work began on Royal Air Force Kirmington. The use of this base was fairly short lived and in 1945 the site was reclaimed for farm land.

The existing runway survived and became the core of the development to build a commercial airport in 1969.

On 20th March 1974 the initial developments including the passenger terminal of Kirmington (Lincolnshire) Airport were opened to the public. Six days later, the new county of Humberside was formed and Humberside Airport it became, known to the airlines as HUY.

The 1990’s saw major investment and new development to the airport including the stretch of the main runway by 38% which was finally opened in 1992, a new ATC Radar system, new fire station, new internal roads, new car parks, a new apron for one additional Boeing 757 aircraft and a purpose built heliport and apron of the helicopter shuttles. The terminal building increase to three times its original size and included extensions to the departure hall and lounge with a much improved check-in desk and offices, a 140 seater restaurant and bar and an extended arrivals hall with new conveyors.

Humberside Airport now handles around 450,000 passengers every year, the main part of the business being through the summer months when there are almost 300 flights a week, 20 of these charter flights and passenger numbers can be well in excess of 2,000 a day.

Further investment is planned, including alterations to the runway and terminal building. An airport hotel and petrol service station also seem likely to get the go ahead very soon.
