NCL - Newcastle International Information
Newcastle Airport started life on the 26th July 1935 - a grass runway,
a club house, a hangar, workshops, an ambulance room, a hose for petrol
and a garage. Cost - just £35,000.
The first scheduled service calling here flew between Croydon and Perth,
Scotland, operated by North Eastern Airways using Rapide and 8-seater
Airspeed Envoy aircraft.
Passenger numbers are continually growing and in October 2000 a major
extension to the terminal was officially opened by Tony Blair, the Prime
Minister.
Due to the increasing capacity an additional 2400 surface-level car-parking
spaces and the extended and improved terminal building which was opened
in May 1994 by the Princess Royal.
Passengers numbers are now up to nearly 3.3 million
P assenger volumes on the fast-growing hub routes demonstrate the potential
for new scheduled services and a £27m extension opened in January
2000 and is already well on the way to doubling passenger throughput.

the journey to Newcastle Airport even easier.

to the Airport flows freely and the region's Metro system feeds directly
into the Airport.
The A1 road network gives travellers fast access to Newcastle Airport.

A696 direct to the Airport.
From the west: Traffic on the A696 dual carriageway to
the airport flows freely and the region's Metro system feeds directly

The A69 links with the A1 and then the A696, again giving dual carriageway
